Some times I drive on Dickson St, Woolooin and see some cool spots to shoot at and think “I need to come here and shoot something dark and moody”.

So because the weather is perfect for that style, that’s just what Jess, Emma and I did. Also, I wanted to tell a story and add some character to these shots. For that reason, my gear choice was a bit different than my usual.

At this right moment my main camera is the A7 III, leaving the A7R III as a backup and for commercial shoots only, so I don’t have to deal with the high resolution when I don’t need all those extra pixels. I also happen to be testing the A9 II. But I went with the A7R III because I did want the resolution and also the grain, as the smaller resolution on the other two cameras handle high ISOs better, and I didn’t want them to be handled better! And to top it up, I used the two old lenses my friend Will gave me: the Hanimar 135mm f/2.8 (Japan) and the Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 (Russia). These are adapted to the Sony and, of course, full manual lenses. The Hanimar is a dream to use, but quite soft wide open; the Helios is a pain (the aperture works the other way around for some reason, so if you are on “f/2” you’re not really. Crazy little lens.

Anyway, here’s what we did 🙂
